Biography and Philosophy

Bsc(Hons) MB BS FRCS – Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

I have over 25 years of surgical and clinical expertise as a Consultant in Hip and Knee surgery making me one of the most credible and successful orthopaedic surgeons in the south of England.  I have treated thousands of patients over the years from all over the world. I am fascinated by joints; no two people are the same shape and neither are their joints. I work on the philosophy that that ”one size does not fit all” and if surgery is required, I will choose an implant specifically to fit that person’s anatomical shape and activity level. I believe passionately that every patient should be treated as an individual.  Surgery is not necessarily always the answer and treatment must offer patients the best solution not only for now but also for their future lifestyle and aspirations. Incorporating the latest medical developments, whether you are an athlete competing on the world stage or an individual who simply wants to be pain free and able to live life to the full again, as a patient of mine, you will receive the best treatment we can offer from not only me but also my highly skilled and compassionate supporting team.

My medical career started at St George’s Hospital, and I completed a further degree in Physiology at London University before qualifying as a doctor. I continued training as a surgeon at St George’s, Charing Cross and Westminster Hospitals in London where I studied various surgical specialties to compliment my future orthopaedic career, including plastic and reconstructive surgery.

On becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England I undertook specialist orthopaedic training at various centres of excellence including the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and St George’s Hospital, working under the guidance of the Orthopaedic Surgeon to the Queen and as a fellow to the founder of the London Hip Unit Sarah Muirhead-Allwood.

I continued with specialist training as a Fellow at several internationally recognised centres of orthopaedic excellence in both the Unites States and Europe where I learnt from acclaimed world leaders in hip and knee surgery. These included The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York where I trained under the ‘father’ of modern knee surgery Dr John Insall, and the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where I studied hip surgery with the ‘legendary’ Dr Bill Harris.

In 1994 I was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at St Richard’s Hospital and the Royal Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust, Chichester, where I have developed a specialist practice in hip and knee surgery. I was the clinical director of the department for seven years working closely with colleagues and the orthopaedic industry to pioneer new developments, techniques and procedures. These include minimally invasive surgery, minimal access surgery, computer aided surgery, keyhole surgery for the knee, cartilage grafting and stem cell techniques, hip resurfacing, and new techniques for when there is a need to redo original hip and knee surgery. I established St Richards Hospital as a centre of excellence for revision joint replacement.

I am actively involved in clinical research and developing new techniques and treatments for patients with arthritis. I am a specialist advisor surgeon to Zimmer-Biomet, the largest orthopaedic manufacturing company in the world, who entrust me with developing their ground-breaking products in the United Kingdom. For example, I was the first surgeon in the UK to implant their ceramic hip replacement, female specific (gender) knee replacement, high flexion total knee replacement, high flexion unicompartmental knee resurfacing and patellofemoral replacement. I pioneered the combination of the latter to create the bicompartmental knee replacement on both the medial (inside) and lateral (outside) parts of the knee to give a superior functional result in the more athletic and active patient. I was also the first to introduce what is now the most popular uncemented hip replacement in Europe to the UK and have subsequently gone on to develop a new hip with the manufacturer Corin incorporating improvements on this design.

I regularly write scientific papers for orthopaedic journals and present them at international conferences. As a consequence I have become a regular lecturer on both the national and international lecture circuit. I run European workshops training other orthopaedic surgeons to learn new hip and knee techniques and in the UK I help surgeons to improve and excel at the delivery of hip and knee surgery. For some years I have been engaged in enhanced recovery programmes in orthopaedics leading to rapid post-operative mobilisation with better function, less post-operative pain and improved comfort.

I am a member of the following organisations

  • Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England
  • Royal Society of Medicine
  • British Hip Society
  • British Association for Surgery of the Knee
  • British Orthopaedic Association
  • British Medical Association
  • General Medical Council
  • Medical Defence Union
  • CRB Accreditation

I am married with three children and live near Chichester. My main interest outside joints is sailing. I’ve sailed all my life and having won the RYA National Youth Championships at the age of 18, I went on to be awarded London University Colours for sailing before joining the Olympic squad. I have gone on to win several national and international sailing championships and I still compete at a national and international level.  I am a member of The Royal Yacht Squadron and was appointed Honorary Orthopaedic Surgeon to the British Olympic Sailing Team in 1999.
